Little
violence in Matara, says PAFFREL
The least number of incidents of election related violence in this
area were recorded during this election, PAFFREL Coordinator for
Matara District P. Hewawitharana told The Sunday Times.
"People
think more broadly nowadays. They are very much aware of what is
happening around them. With the number of elections held being increased,
people have realised that getting involved in brawls is futile.
In a local government election or even a Parliamentary election
there are a number of candidates from the area itself and they have
their own supporters.
But
in a Presidential election such as this there are only two main
candidates and that too at the national level. Due to these reasons
there is a tendency not to violate election laws or commit acts
of violence," Mr. Hewavitharana said.
He
said that other than several minor pre-election acts of violence
reported there were no major incidents. "We feel that even
the voter turnout is also significant. The number of those who voted
should be between 75% and 80%, he said.
