Dakini back with a bang
Dakini, one of Sri Lanka's earliest export quality women's clothing brands, has made a comeback to the local fashion scene after a lapse of 15 years with a new store in Colombo's newest mall.

One of the pioneers in retailing export surplus in the local market when it opened in 1985, Dakini's distinctive outlet in Colombo 3 became the store for quality conscious shoppers until it closed five years later as part of a business rationalisation.

The brand has now relaunched this month with a glamorous third floor boutique at Bambalapitiya's Premier Pacific Pinnacle with exclusive imported and local garments.

The store focuses on fashion for 'Missy' and 'Petite' clientele but plans to stock larger sizes in the near future. The collection comprises casual, office and evening wear with matching accessories and lingerie hand picked for the Dakini label with the fashion conscious in mind.

A few international brand names share space with the Dakini label, in a store which emphasises quality rather than quantity. Kumar Melvani, the Managing Director of the new shop explains: "In an era where stores stock multiples of the same item with a lot of the clothes coming off mass production lines, there is a need to provide the more discerning market with hand picked clothes."

The new Dakini store is backed by Mr. Melvani's company 'Apparel Magic'. The company plans to offer home delivery of clothes ordered by on-line buyers at a later stage, Mr Melvani said. The new store is run by Mr. Melvani's wife Asanka, a former stewardess at Sri Lankan airlines. All items in the shop are handpicked by her and sourced from well-known shops in Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, China and India.
