French films at Alliance Francaise
The French film "Hommes femmes: mode d'emploi" by Claude Lelouch will be screened at Alliance Francaise at Barnes Place, Colombo-7 on November 22 at 3 pm and November 23 at 6 pm.

Starring Fabrice Luchini , Bernard Tapie , Alessandra Martines , Pierre Arditi the film was first released in 1996. Speaking about the film the director Claude Lelouch says, "In the end, I am an "athlete" film-maker ever filming the subhuman race for happiness. Even more so, given that this twentieth century's last dash promises to be the craziest ever, with love, work and health fighting it out neck-and-neck in the home straight.

As, for the first time in centuries, that eternal winner, war, has fallen behind - in the fifties. Even glory and fortune have been cast adrift. So it is that love, health and work are left to climb upon the podium. But in which order? What I try to film are sensations, intimations, of that heartfelt conviction that life is more and more beautiful while we've ever more difficulty in keeping up with progress. Why are we so mistrustful of such simplicity? Love, work, health? Whatever happens, the winner is sure to be feminine: as this third millennium dawns there's a strong likelihood that the user's manual will be at last in the hands of women."

Hommes Femmes is a tale of two men who were not destined to meet. "Two men Fabio Lini, an actor turned undercover cop and Benoit Blanc a lawyer-turn ed-businessman, meet in a clinic both seeking a cure from their chronic stomach pains. The doctor deliberately switches the medical reports of the two men in an act of ex-mistress vengeance, leading to misunderstandings and a chance for both men to reassess their lives. One who has almost everything and wants everything else.

The other has very little but intends to hang onto it. So both in their own way are stricken with anxiety. It all begins in a doctor's waiting room, due to a minor ulcer brought on by this worry. For the first man, love, friendship and money are no longer enough. The second wonders what tomorrow will bring. Will he manage one day to ply his real trade? Will his girlfriend ever marry him?

"The chains of love are never as strong as when they are made of gold", says the first man. "Love can be bought only by love", answers the second. Little by little this oddball duo will bond into an inseparable friendship as strange and strong as the friendships we see in the movies, books and real life... Hommes Femmes (122 minu-tes) will be in French with English subtitles.
