N’Eliya
Grand Hotel wins award for food
Arboured by large spreading trees and nestling in the pleasant cool
hilly climes, the Nuwara Eliya Grand Hotel since being established
in 1806 - has come to be regarded as the showpiece of the District,
and as well to be virtually spoken of as being synonymous with N'Eliya
itself.
Widely acknowledged for its old world charm and present day exquisite
elegance, indeed a fine blend of the old and new, the Grand Hotel
has won quite a few prizes, not forgetting too, the accolades showered
upon it on many an occasion, for its well landscaped and best maintained
gardens, with its pleasing to the eye and mind, foliage and attractive
flowers.
Far from being complacent and resting on its laurels, the Grand
Hotel has kept forging ahead, to make the right kind of impression
to now win an award, for excellence achieved in food. This commendable
recognition in the field of food comes from one of the leading up
market tour operators from Britain. 'Saga Holidays' has been operating
to Sri Lanka since 1996 and have grown by expanding their programme,
promoting Sri Lanka from sun and sand to nature, adventure and wild
life holidays. A niche market tour operator, 'Saga Holidays' specializes
in handling senior citizens and has a repeat client base of over
800,000, who travel with them worldwide.
This prestigious award being made to Grand hotel N'Eliya, was based
on a year's customer feedback for consistency and standards maintained
on food quality, presentation, variety, hygiene and food temperature.
It will be presented at a special function in conjunction with the
World Travel Mart trade fair to be held in Excel World London from
the 14th to the 17th November 2005. This is one of the largest tourism
fairs, where potential buyers meet from all over the world to do
business. The local handling agent for 'Saga Holidays' in Sri Lanka
is United Holidays.
The Director General Manager, of the N'Eliya Grand Hotel, Harin
De Costa, felt it was a rewarding experience to win an award of
this nature for food and, said that in keeping with the organizational
policy, the Hotel's team of chefs are being constantly trained,
and the product has been relatively upgraded to meet the demanding
trends, even at times when tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka are very
low. The Hotel currently is upgrading the Coffee shop, the main
restaurant and the supper club and the menus in all food outlets
will also be changed, to coincide with the season ahead.
This haven in the hills the "Grand" with its colonial
architecture does assume a measure of majestic splendour, in that
it was originally the private residence of the British Governor
Sri Edward Barnes.
And so the winning of this award for excellence in food, does whilst
giving N'Eliya Grand Hotel the added impetus and drive, will also
serve as a boost for the tourist industry in Sri Lanka.
