Disaster
averted at Kelaniya crossing
A Gampaha-bound bus carrying 40 passengers narrowly missed a major
collision with a train at the main Kandy-Colombo road at Pattiya
Junction in Kelaniya, eyewitnesses said.
The
bus driver apparently had tried to cross the railway line through
the closed barrier to beat the office rush. But as he entered the
crossing he had seen the oncoming train and managed to manoeuvre
the bus parallel to the track.
The
train driver too had seen the bus and applied the brakes. Eyewitnesses
said that if the train had failed to stop, it would have hit the
bus.
The bus passengers had tried to assault a shocked driver, but timely
police intervention prevented any untoward incidents. The driver
was to be produced before a magistrate, police said.
