Toy
exporters’ annual sale again

The Toy Exporters’ Association is once again busy with preparations
for its year-end sale of export quality products. Manufactured by
skilled craftsmen, dedicated to classical toy making, their products
include the Timberlina range of exquisite dolls’ houses made
with tropical plantation timber-each one an original, built to withstand
years of play.
The
upcoming sale organised by the Association will feature the products
of Asian Toys, Timberlina, Excel Exports, DSL Lanka and Orchid Agencies
among others. The sale includes educational puzzles, doll houses,
Montessori aids, teaching equipment, push-pull toys, soft toys and
many more.
Speaking
to The Sunday Times, President of the Toy Exporters’ Association,
Irvine Vancuylenberg said the sale is being held for the third consecutive
year. The previous shows were successful as there was tremendous
public response, he adds
“Our
Association was established in 1994 and we cater only to the foreign
market such as Europe and the USA. The association consists of wooden
toy manufacturers and our products comply with international safety
standards. We have 14 companies and each of them employs about 40-200
permanent employees. Additionally we have home centres through which
the women who have family commitments too get an opportunity to
earn some extra money,” Irvine said. “Also it promotes
village level entrepreneurship development as we provide employment
to rural folk.
Asked
what the purpose behind a year end sale was, since they cater only
to the foreign market, the Association feels such a move would give
the local buyers an opportunity to buy export quality toys.
“Generally
we supply for the foreign market. But this year end sale gives the
local buyers a chance to buy our products. Also we believe this
sale would bear witness to what the Sri Lankan industry is capable
of and this will give some kind of inspiration to the small and
medium scale industries,” Irvine said.
The toy houses are well finished and the windows, doors and main
panels swing open providing easy access to the interiors giving
full scope to artistic decorators.
Traditional
and contemporary furniture is also available for all Timerberlina
houses. Creative log cabins, packed in their own attractive solid
wooden chests or corrugated cartons are made to an old traditional
European and Canadian interlocking building method, enough to inspire
young minds to construct various designs. The Toy Exporters’
sale will be on Friday, December 2 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Bishop’s
College auditorium.
