Grander
alliance in the making
The LTTE is working out strategies to set up an alliance with Tamil
political parties outside the North-East on similar lines of the
Tamil National Alliance (TNA) dominated by it.
Ceylon
Workers’ Congress leader Arumugam Thondaman yesterday held
talks with LTTE political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan in Kilinochchi
while Upcountry People’s Front leader P. Chandrasekaran is
due to meet Mr. Thamilselvan on Wednesday.
Mr.
Thondaman’s discussion yesterday also focused on ways of preventing
a further split in his party amidst moves by the government to convince
some of the CWC members to join it. Two CWC members have so far
joined the government.
CWC
Vice President R. Yogarajan told The Sunday Times that his party
had sought the meeting with the LTTE to discuss ways of protecting
the interests of the upcountry Tamils and forming an alliance similar
to the TNA.
Separate discussions between the CWC and the TNA are due to be held
in the Parliament complex on Monday.
The
Sunday Times learns that Mr. Thamilselvan had told the CWC delegation
that they should have discussions with Tamil parties outside the
North-east and reach an understanding.
Soon
after the meeting with the CWC yesterday, Mr. Thamilselvan said
that the alliance of Tamil parties outside the North-East would
further strengthen the Tamil community.
In
addition to the CWC and the UPF, Western Province People’s
Alliance leader Mano Ganeshan who is currently a UNP member in Parliament,
is also likely to join the alliance. The three parties have already
held separate discussions in Colombo.
