Warne
beats Lillee mark
Another feather in the cap
Brett Lee took 5-93 as Australia bowled out South Africa for 296
on day two of the second Test but they lost Matthew Hayden as they
closed in Perth on 38-1.
The
Proteas were 127-1 thanks to AB de Villiers (68) but Shane Warne
(3-92) set a record for victims in a calendar year of 87 as they
slumped to 187-6.
Mark Boucher (62) and Shaun Pollock (34) then rode their luck to
add 77.
Lee polished the innings off before Hayden was caught by Boucher
off Charl Langeveldt with the scores tied.
Warne
breaks Lillee Test record
With a lively and bouncy Waca pitch living up to its reputation
as the quickest in the world, a result is a positive result distinct
possibility for both sides.
South Africa, replying to the Aussies' 258, were controlling affairs
after Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers added 45 to their overnight
38-0 on the second morning.
But
it started to go wrong for them when Smith, who had played cautiously,
was brilliantly caught by a diving Ricky Ponting at second slip
off a Nathan Bracken inswinger.
Herschelle
Gibbs took 23 minutes to get off the mark and scratched around for
21 off 43 balls before dragging a wide Lee delivery on to his stumps.
It still looked healthy for the Proteas when they went for lunch
on 128-2 but Warne triggered a collapse when he equalled Dennis
Lillee's 1981 record by beating de Villiers' push forward to bowl
him through bat and pad in the second over after the resumption.
Jacques
Rudolph, brought into the side to cover for the injured Jacques
Kallis, failed to reproduce the form he had shown in the warm-up
matches when he edged Lee low to Justin Langer at third slip two
overs later.
Big-hitting
all-rounder Justin Kemp did not last long, driving Glenn McGrath
straight to mid-off and when Warne somewhat bizarrely had Ashwell
Prince lbw - with the ball lodging between both legs - he was celebrating
yet another record.
Boucher,
who hit seven boundaries, and Pollock's 35-ball 34, helped bring
the tourists back into the game. But Lee beat Pollock's defences
and when Hayden took a stunning catch at slip to help Warne remove
Boucher, the door was once again opened for Australia.
Charl
Langeveldt went leg before first ball to Lee and and Makhaya Ntini's
entertaining cameo of 12 off 10 balls ended when he skied an attempted
pull off the paceman and Brad Hodge held on coming round from mid-on.
