Two superlative efforts in the 200 metres and the 4x100 relay by
SAF Games poolist and Sri Lanka’s number two sprinter Pramuditha
Caldera highlighted a gloomy and wet first day at the Inter University
Athletic meet conducted on the cinder track at Peradeniya.
Caldera,
who was having a a slight leg sprain, won the 200 metres in a relaxed
23.2 seconds. He also ran a strong anchor lap to help his team,
Kelaniya University win the 4x100 relay, P.P. Weerasinghe, displayed
a strong finish to win the longer hurdles event for the University
of Sabaragamuwa.
Kelaniya
University’s J.S.S. Fernando did well to win the High Jump,
beating last year’s winner Kisho Kumar into second place.
His attempt at breaking the record of 1.94 metres ended in failure
as the take off was slippery.
At
the end of day one, Kelaniya was in the lead with 49 points, followed
by Peradeniya (35½), Sri Jayawardenapura (29) and Ruhuna
(28), Jaffna (33½ ).
