Depicting
the long journey of the Sacred Tooth Relic
By L.B.Senaratne
The celebrations marking 2550 years of Buddhism were inaugurated
from Kandy, with a procession of floats depicting the places where
the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha was kept since its arrival
in Sri Lanka from the State of Kalinga.
The
Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Dela Bandara in concurrence with the Mahanayakes
of the Asgiriya and Malwatta Chapters, Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkita
Thera and Ven. Tibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera respectively, decided
that the floats be taken to the various vihares where the Sacred
Tooth Relic was kept.
At
a ceremony held at the Pathiruppuwa of the Sri Dalada Maligawa yesterday,
the floats were taken in procession to the Delgamuwa Vihare where
the Sacred Relic was first brought. The floats would return on Poya
day (Sunday) and would be taken in procession next Poya to Yapahuwa.
The
Diyawadana Nilame said the purpose of taking these floats to the
places where the Sacred Tooth Relic found refuge over the years
is to create an awareness among the Buddhists in this country of
their rich history.
Among those present at the ceremony were the Maha Sangha of the
Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters, headed by the Anunayake Thera of
Malwatta Ven. Rajakeeya Panditha Niyangoda Vijitha Thera and the
Anunayake Thera of Asgiriya Ven. Galgama Aththadassi Thera.
