Let
them take your heart
It’s Valentine’s Day with a difference, for instead
of a purely romantic night out, Sri Lankan music fans will get the
chance to experience a show that promises great entertainment when
Kool and the Gang and the Al Mckay Allstars perform at the CR&FC
on February 14.
We
all know of Kool and the Gang, so who are the Al Mckay Allstars
who will bring alive the hits of Earth Wind and Fire? The New Orleans-
born Al Mckay was a member of the legendary group Earth Wind and
Fire from 1973 all through to 1981 in the heyday of the band’s
success and was also writer and co-writer of some of their most
enduring hits such as ‘September’ and ‘Singasong’.
When
he left Earth Wind and Fire after a strenuous stint of tours and
concerts, to concentrate on his responsibilities as a single parent,
Al forged a new band, originally known as the L.A. Al and later
the Al McKay Allstars who celebrate Al’s past with a string
of Earth Wind and Fire hits in their repertoire. The 13-member band
is made up of a diverse group of musicians, including the former
Amazing Grace member Hussain Jiffry.
Undoubtedly
popular band, Kool and the Gang will be the star attraction at this
three-hour concert. Describing their sound as an ‘extraordinary
sweep of popular music, their website states that Kool & The
Gang found a special sound at the unique intersection of jazz, r&b,
funk and pop.
Formed
as a jazz ensemble in the mid-'60s, Kool & the Gang became one
of the most inspired funk units during the '70s, and one of the
most popular R&B groups of the '80s.
Famous
for their hits such as “Celebration”, “Get Down
on It”, “Cherish”, “Joanna”, “Let’s
Go Dancing”, “Take My Heart” and “Stone
Love”, their 30-year career has been one of lasting success
over the years with 700 million albums sold, two Grammy Awards and
seven American Music Awards, not to mention 25 Top Ten R&B hits,
nine Top Ten hits and 31 Gold and Platinum albums.
The
Sunday Times, Daily Mirror, Lankadeepa and Hi!! Magazine are the
print media sponsors for the show.
