A Sri Lankan sports journalist received international recognition
last week, when he was invited by the prestigious Laureus World
Sports Academy, to be part of an elite Media Selection Panel for
this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards.
Channaka
de Silva, Sports Editor of the “Daily Mirror” was officially
invited by the Academy’s chairman and legendary athlete Edwin
C. Moses to join the panel which annually picks outstanding athletes
for Laureus World Sports Award in the categories of World Sportsman
of the Year, World Team of the Year, World Newcomer of the Year
and World Comeback of the Year.
The
invited panel of sports journalists nominate candidates across all
sports disciplines and all continents. They will be joined in the
selection process by 42 of the greatest all-time sporting legends,
who are members of the Academy. The winners of the 2006 Laureus
World Sports Awards will be announced on May 22 in Barcelona, Spain.
De
Silva, a BA honours graduate of the University of Sri Lanka has
been a sports journalist for 16 years and coveted the last three
athletics world athletics championships in Edmonton (2001), Paris
(2003) and Helsinki (2005).
