Villagers in Gomarankadawala in the Trincomalee District still live
in fear in the aftermath of the brutal slaying of six villagers
last Sunday. “Some of us spend the nights in the jungles as
we fear that we may be attacked again. We need more security to
live in our homes,” one villager lamented.
The
six youth including two schoolboys were trying to retrieve a tractor
that had got stuck in the mud, when suddenly a group of suspected
LTTE cadres gunned them down, villagers said.
“The
tractor was bringing harvested paddy when it got stuck in the mud.
They were trying to pull it out when they came under attack. The
dead were identified as M.D.Chaminda Prasanna Bandara (27), A.Anura
Shantha Abeysena (19), R.Eranda Sandaruwan Rupasena (15), D.Lalith
Bandara Dissanayake (15), Ajith Kumara Ariywwansa, (19) and D.Wasantha
kumara (24).
Chaminda
Bandara was a home guard attached to the Gomarankadawala police
while Anura Shantha and Ajith Kumara were students of Kalyanapura
Vidyalaya. Sandaruwan Rupasena and Lalith Bandara were 0/Level students. An
eye witness said that the suspected LTTErs had come from behind
and shot them. Visibility was poor because the area was covered
with thick smoke as a result of the gun fire. The suspects had dissapeared
into the surrounding jungle soon after the shooting. All six victims
died on the spot.
