Kandy pay
tribute to Charles
The champion Kandy Sports Club outfit added another
feather to their cap by trouncing a combined CR, Air Force and Police
team by 64 points (7 goals, 3 tries) to 5 (a try) in the Charles
Wijewardena memorial match at Nittawela yesterday. Kandy led 38-0
at lemons.
Charles Wijewardena, it will be recalled, was a tower of strength
to whatever team he represented, especially as a very accurate and
prolific kicker at goal. His untimely and sudden demise was a cruel
blow at the hands of fate.
This match was a good outing for the Kandy team before they open
the season next weekend.
The opposition was not all that testing and the home team won as
they pleased.
Their opponents, drawn together as they were from a couple of clubs,
showed a lack of cohesion and understanding.
The try scorers for Kandy were Sajith Mallikarachchi, Imran Bistamin
(2), Sameera Silva, Nalaka Weerakody, Prasad Chaturanga and Jeeva
Galagamuwa. Brothers Nalaka and Eranda Weerakody shared the conversions.
The combined team scored a try in the dying minutes of the game,
off a line out close to the goal line.
Referee: Anil Jayasinghe.
