IP Douglas’
father claims Rs. 31 million
A fundamental rights petition has been filed by
the family of the slain police inspector Douglas Nimal.
The petitioner Sandha Hennedige Dynasius, the
father and the three children cited IGP Chandra Fernando, DIG Administration
B.M.Liyanage, DIG Colombo Division Pujith Jayasundera and 14 others
as respondents.
The petitioner said Inspector Nimal together with
four other officers were instructed by a fax message from SSP Sarath
Lugoda to appear before the Colombo Crime Division office on trumped
up charges of aiding and abetting drug traffickers and obtaining
remuneration for the services rendered.
The petitioner said that when Inspector Nimal
and the others arrived at the office they were arrested and later
produced in the Magistrate’s Court and remanded.
He said the officers were arrested on false allegations
made by a woman named Zulfika who was arrested for trafficking drugs
together with one Somapala.
She had said that these officers were aiding and
abetting her in the transactions and were compensated by the traffickers.
The officers were later exonerated on all the
charges as there was no evidence to prove any of the allegations.
The petitioner also said that Inspector Nimal had differences with
SSP Lugoda as he had arrested people who had close connections with
the SSP.
The petitioner said Inspector Nimal was to file
a fundamental rights petition against those who were responsible
for the false arrest and detention of the officers and ask to reinstate
them as they were innocent victims.
He said the officer was on his way to file the
petition when he and his wife were killed by unidentified gunmen.
The petitioner claims that his fundamental rights
guaranteed under the Constitution had been violated and claims compensation
of Rs. One million for himself and Rs. Ten million each for the
three children and also requests that Inspector Nimal be entitled
to all consequential benefits.
