UNP
politico attacks US diplomats
UNP Western Province Councillor Duminda Silva and his friends have
been accused of attacking foreign guests, including US embassy staff,
and smashing up property on Friday night at one of Colombo’s
trendy night clubs, “Clansys”.
The incident followed an argument between the politician and the
night club staff.
Cinnamon Gardens police confirmed that they had
received a complaint against the provincial councillor and were
carrying out investigations.
The Sunday Times learns that the politician is alleged to have broken
glasses of the club and assaulted the guests, including a lady attached
to the US embassy in Colombo.
Mr. Duminda Silva is presently on bail over a
rape case. The club was back in operation yesterday around 11 p.m.
after police guards stationed there after the incident withdrew.
This was the second attack on the club by a politician
in recent times. Earlier Deputy Labour Minister Mervyn Silva and
his supporters were accused of attacking and causing damage to the
club.
