Alleged Court
order violation by Lewke
By Shane Seneviratne
Contrary to a restraining order by Kandy District
Judge, Nissanka Bandula Karunatrana, to refrain from acting as the
Basnayake Nilame of the Dodamwala Natha Devalaya or contesting as
a candidate for this post, it is alleged that Anura Lalith Gurusinghe
Lewke violated the Court order.
The Court gave the order following a petition
by the Basnayake Nilame of the Pasgama Sri Natha Devalaya Riyal
Wakishta Madugalle, who said Mr. Lewke should be disqualified from
contesting the post for several reasons.
The Court issued a restraining order last Monday
and ordered the respondent to appear before Court on May 29 and
make his submissions.
The new Basnayaka Nilame was elected with 15 votes
as against 14 votes for his opponent this week.
Among the main reasons cited for the disqualification
of Mr. Lewke to hold the post, was that he owns land on a property
owned by the Devale, his duties will clash with the existing duties
as he may also have to serve as the acting Basnayaka Nilame of the
Natha Davale in Kandy.
