Music mix
By Ishani Ranasinghe
Colombo audiences have always been music lovers,
but in recent years it seems as if this is increasing as each day
goes by. Why would I make such a statement? Think about it. How
many concerts are organised each month, and how many of them manage
to draw out a huge crowd? People love music – it is after
all said that it heals the soul. So yes, everyone enjoys an evening
of music catering to your taste, and just maybe dance one’s
troubles away.
Music concerts always have their very own thing.
Something that makes each a little different from the other, and
Spectrum organised by the participants of the Interact Leadership
Training programme is one of those concerts; their theme –
Fusion of Variety.
Interact Leadership Training or ILT, as it is
known by everyone involved in the Interact movement, is a training
programme which brings together about 50 Interactors from all over
Sri Lanka, who will be on the incoming board for the next Interact
year. The training programme that they have to undergo, for the
duration of a few months, ends with an examination, which is a theory
paper as well as a practical examination. Organising a fund raiser
is the practical aspect of the programme. This is mainly done to
give these individuals the chance to gain experience, as they will
be the people running their clubs in a few months.

“We were given a target, and were told that
we needed to raise that amount of money to help rebuild a few of
the schools affected by the tsunami,” says Rohith Wijesooriya,
project chairperson for the concert. He adds that considering the
amount of money they had to raise, they figured that the best way
to do so would be to have a concert. Therefore organising Spectrum
became a part of their ILT practical.
The committee, comprising about 50 Interactors,
has been working very hard for the past few months to bring Spectrum
to the music loving public in Colombo. “We wanted to give
upcoming bands and performers a chance to show their talents,”
says Rohith, adding that at the auditions they hope to pick out
a few bands, as well as two to three soloists.
Adding colour to the evening will be an amazing
line up of guest performers. Some of the performers tipped to perform
include, Daddy J, Deadlyn 21, Cynosure, Zenith, La Trios (a western
dance troupe), Sankha and Nuwan and Shamal. Going along with their
theme ‘fusion of variety’, the concert will feature
a mix of almost everything. Be it baila, rock, alternative, pop,
dance… it will all be there on stage!
Spectrum will be held on June 9 at the Bishop’s
College Auditorium from 7.00 p.m. onwards. Tickets will be available
at KFC, all Interact Clubs, and at the gate on the day of the concert. |
