Clancys’ brawl: Identification parade tomorrow

An identification parade will be held tomorrow to identify persons involved in the brawl with two US Marines at the popular night club Clancys for which UNP Western Provincial Councillor Duminda Silva has been arrested and remanded.

Mr.Silva who was warded in the Intensive Care Unit of the Nawaloka Hospital was transferred to the Colombo National Hospital on Thursday on the orders of the Colombo Chief Magistrate Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena.

He has been remanded until June 5 for the alleged assault on the Marines attached to the US Embassy.

The two Marines, of whom one was a female, involved in the incident have given a statement to officers of the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) on Thursday.

The CCD is in search of two more suspects who were said to have gone to the aid of the Provincial Councillor.

The CCD has obtained footage from the Clancys closed circuit cameras which had recorded part of the incident. According to the statement given by Duminda Silva, the male US Marine had tried to sexually harass a woman he (Silva) had come with, which resulted in an argument. He also said the female US Marine had taken a bottle and attacked him injuring him.

The US Marine who had allegedly attacked Silva was also injured when Silva’s bodyguards went to his aid, the CCD investigations revealed.

The staff of the club had reportedly refrained from getting involved in the incident.

Cinnamon Gardens police confirmed a complaint had been received against the provincial councillor for causing unrest in the club. However the very next day the investigations were handed over to the CCD.
