Court puts
off Athas case
The Court of Appeal on June 1 postponed the hearing
of the appeal in the case of criminal trespassing, intimidation
and unlawful entry to the residence of The Sunday Times consultant
editor and defence correspondent Iqbal Athas.

Herath were found guilty and sentenced to nine years rigorous imprisonment
and a fine of Rs 10,000 imposed on them. Herath in the meanwhile,
was killed in a separate incident.
The two accused were found guilty on two counts
of committing the offence of entering the residence of Athas on
12th February 1998 and intimidating and threatening to cause grievous
hurt by using a firearm. On the first count they were sentenced
to 7 years RI and two years on the second Count and Rs. 10,000 as
fine and in case of default one year RI to be added.
The bench comprising Justices D.J. de S Balapatabendhi
and Eric Basanayake postponed the case to be heard on two consecative
days so that they could conclude the case.
The case has been fixed for November 27 and 28.
