North-East
violence claims five lives
Two soldiers, two LTTE cadres and a civilian were
killed in a series of incidents in the north and east yesterday,
military sources said.
At Eluthmaduval in Muhamalai, suspected LTTE cadres
set off a claymore mine targeting an Army double-cab around 7.20
p.m. last night. One solider was killed and another wounded while
two soldiers in the vehicle escaped unhurt, the sources said.
In another incident yesterday afternoon at Kokukuthuduwai
in Weli Oya, a soldier was killed and another was injured in a claymore
mine blast and RPG, the sources said. The soldiers were attacked
while they were returning to their camp after route-clearing patrol.
Meanwhile last night, a soldier and two policemen
were injured when suspected LTTE cadres flung a grenade at a joint
police-army sentry point in Mannar town. In return fire an LTTE
cadre was killed while trying to escape, the military sources said.
However, pro-LTTE website Tamilnet claimed that
the person killed in the incident was a civilian identified as M.
Hussain from Uppukulam. At Kaluvankerny, an LTTE cadre was shot
dead when he tried to infiltrate into an army-controlled area last
night.
Meanwhile, a civilian was shot inside the Valachanai
bus depot last night by unidentified men.
Also yesterday, the main road linking Batticaloa
and Ampara was closed for more than five hours after a claymore
mine explosion near the Kallady bridge, military sources said.
An army vehicle passing the bridge narrowly escaped
the blast around at 8.30 a.m.
Another claymore mine was set off in Mavadivembu
in Batticaloa last morning injuring one soldier.
