Sister claims dying brother robbed in hospital

By Vanessa Sridharan

A family was robbed of a life, money and jewellery after the van they were travelling in met with an accident on the Warakapola – Nittambuwa road on May 22.

The S. Chandrasekaran family was travelling from Trincomalee to Colombo when their hired van met with the accident.

K. Sugandini said her brother S. Guruparan was driving the vehicle and herself, her father, son, a police constable and the owner were in the van at the time.
She said while she was warded at the Warakapola hospital, her father, brother, son and the vehicle owner were transferred to the Kegalle Hospital.

“The nurses at the hospital told me our belongings were with them and that one of our ‘relatives’ had taken my brother’s gold bracelet. That was when I told the nurses that none of our relatives knew about the accident,” Sugandini said.

The OPD workers had handed over her brother’s three rings, purse, Rs. 9,000, his handkerchief, watch and her father’s ID to her sister Mithini and her brother’s friend Ramesh when they arrived at the Warakapola hospital the next day.

“We were informed that my brother’s bracelet, two other chains and money were sent with my brother to the Kegalle hospital” Mithini said.

My brother who was driving the van at the time of the accident had attached a packet containing US$ 10,000, Euro 15,000, and 570 Sterling Pounds around his abdomen which he had removed from the family locker at Seylan Bank to be used for our sister’s wedding. “When I went to the Kegalle hospital I was horrified to learn that my brother Guruparan had died and that the money and his chains were missing and unaccounted for,” Sugandini lamented.

The family had made a complaint to the Kegalle police regarding the incident but so far they have not been successful in locating the cash and jewellery that had gone missing allegedly robbed by somebody unknown, with the connivance of some hospital employees.

Kegalle SSP Wilfred Mahanayake said the complaint is under investigation.
