CEB reforms
Bill coming again
The proposed Power Sector Reforms Bill is to be
presented to Parliament once again after it was put off on May 23,
Minister John Seneviratne told The Sunday Times.
The Bill which provides for the formation of public
companies to manage the CEB ran into opposition following protests
from the JVP.
The Bill which was to be presented in Parliament
on May 23 was put off, following which at a Parliament Consultative
Committee on June 8 it failed to gain approval as the JVP represented
by four members opposed it.
Minister Seneviratne told The Sunday Times that
the Government was determined to go ahead with the reforms.
“The CEB is running at a loss so we need
to improve its efficiency and productivity. The reforms are sorely
needed. We will present the Bill to Parliament but no exact date
has been fixed,” he said.
