facing torture charges get bail

Three police officers, indicted for torturing
a theft suspect have been released by High Court Judge D. S. C.
Lekamwasam after they pleaded not guilty to the charge.
When the three police officers -- Inspector W.S.
Uvandasiri, Sub Inspector W.M. Seneviratne and Sergeant W.G.Pathmasiri
were brought before the Kandy High Court on Friday and the indictment
was read out, they pleaded not guilty.
Their lawyer Wijaya Wickramaratne asked Court
that the three police officers be released on bail as they were
serving officers.
The Judge then ordered that the three suspects
be released on bail.
The case is to be taken up again on July 1.
The three police officers were arrested on a complaint
made by Chanaka Bandara Jayaratne, a suspect detained for the theft
of a water pump, in June 2003.
