JVP maintains
red light for CEB reforms
By Shelani Perera
Plans to re-introduce the proposed bill on power
sector reforms early next month in Parliament will be opposed by
the JVP, if the government fails to drop some clauses relating to
privatization, a JVP parliamentarian said yesterday.
The bill which was due to be presented in Parliament
last week was held back and is now likely to be presented on July
4. The presentation has been delayed due to opposition from the
JVP.
JVP Parliamentarian K D Lal Kantha said the exclusion
of privatization was one of the demands put forward by the party.
He said that at a meeting with President Mahinda
Rajapaksa on Tuesday, the party was given an assurance that a fresh
bill would be presented excluding some of the clauses proposed by
the former UNF government.
Meanwhile the UNP’s Assistant General Secretary
Tissa Attanayake said the party would take a stand after studying
the fresh bill.
He said the government must take a firm decision
without acting according to the whims of the JVP.
Essentially, the bill provides for public companies
to manage the CEB in a bid to improve its efficiency and reduce
staggering losses, Treasury officials say.
