Confident
CH have it easy
By Harry Jayachandra
CH and FC played extremely well to defeat Army
by 32 points (2 goals, 3 tries and 1 penalty) to 20 ( 2 goals and
two penalties). This was in their Caltex Trophy ‘A’
Division which was played at Maitland Crescent yesterday.
The victors were on song from the kick off. They
completely rattled Army. In just the fifth minute of play, the forwards
went on the rampage. This ended with prop Jayananda Ranaweera touching
down. Centre Saliya Kumara missed the conversion. It was not a costly
miss as five minutes later centre Mathisha Silva scored the first
of his two tries. This was after the the forwards and backs combined
superbly. Kumara was once again off target.
After absorbing more than 20 minutes of intense
pressure from the home side, Army finally got on the scoreboard.
A CH player was penalized and Kapila Knolton obliged with a straight
forward penalty. The next ten minutes saw both Knolton and Kumara
putting over penaties for their respective sides.
CH came alive once again in the last ten minutes
of the first half. The backs began to run the Army defence ragged
by spreading the ball wide and importantly holding on to it. First
Kumara touched and converted his own try. Then winger Zakir Badurdeen
went over. Kumara converted to give his side an imposing 27 points
to 6 – lead at lemons.
Army came flying out of the blocks in the second
half. A good backline move saw Knolton touching down. He made no
mistake with the conversion. Then centre Asanka Perera scored. Knolton
once again converted to reduce to the deficit to one goal. Unfortunately
Army’s joy was short lived. Mathisha Silva made sure of a
CH win with a fine try.
