Isipathana, St. Peter’s, Zahira and Wesley were the teams to impress on day one of the two day Western Province inter-schools under 20 seven-a-side rugby tournament at Havelock Park yesterday. The four teams ended with a hundred percent record by winning all their matches to reach the quarterfinals to be worked out today.

In Group ‘A’ Isipathana beat Science College, Piliyandala MMV and Prince of Wales. They also had the honour of recording the highest score for the day when they routed Piliyandala MMV 57-5. St. Peter’s too won their three games defeating St. Benedict’s, Thurstan and DSS convincingly. In Group ‘C’ Zahira recorded wins over Royal Panadura, Nalanda and Mahanama while in Group ‘D’ (which had only three teams) Wesley overcame Carey and Lumbini MV.The other four teams to advance to the quarterfinals are: Prince of Wales, Thurstan, Nalanda and Lumbini MV. Sixteen teams were due to participate in the Segment ‘A’ category but S. Thomas’ failed to turn up which left the teams in Group ‘D’ to play only two matches.
