Cey-Nor signs MoU to develop fishing industry

Relief Aid International, Canada, (RAIC) last week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the CEY-NOR Foundation (Cey-Nor), a state-owned company under the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, to provide assistance worth C$500,000 to the government to rehabilitate the tsunami affected fishing industry.

The Livelihood Division of the Reconstruction and Development Agency (RADA), which is spearheading tsunami reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts, arranged and facilitated the signing of the agreement, a RADA statement said. The project is expected to expedite livelihood restoration in the tsunami affected areas.

RAIC has agreed to provide resin transfer moulding, light megaject sprinter equipments, accessories, spareparts, mother moulds, deck moulds, necessary fiberglass (mat and woven and in rolls), resins, gelcoat and materials for the construction of fiberglass boats. Training will also be provided for the Cey-Nor staff in UK.

RAIC will provide the necessary operational funds and specific expertise, raw materials, machineries and tools to Cey-Nor to be used in building 30ft IBM One-Day Fishing Boats at its boat yard at Mattakkuliya in Colombo and Unawatuna in Galle.

Sri Lanka’s fishing industry was badly affected after the tsunami, which claimed the lives of over 5,000 fishermen. Tens of thousands affiliated to the fishing industry lost their homes and livelihoods. According to government estimates, 54% of the country’s fishing fleet was destroyed by the tsunami.
