UN envoy

A United Nations envoy on matters relating to children
in armed conflicts is coming to Sri Lanka to personally check on
reports of continuing recruitment of child soldiers by the LTTE
and the Karuna faction, a UN official said.

Ambassador Rock |
Allan Rock, a former Canadian Ambassador to the
United Nations, is being sent by UN Special Rapporteur Radhika Coomaraswamy
following reports that the Karuna faction is also now abducting
and recruiting children in the east.
The mission by Ambassador Rock comes after the
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) expressed concern
over continuing recruitment of children.
UNICEF Senior Programme Coordinator Yasmin Haque
said they were in contact with the Karuna group regarding the issue
and negotiating the release of the children.
