CMC: UNP
plans stymied
By Nalaka Nonis
The UNP’s plans to take control of the Colombo
Municipal Council (CMC) have been hampered by the infighting in
the UNP-backed independent group.
A crisis has arisen in the group with Stanley
Jansz who was appointed as the CMC’s Deputy Mayor and later
replaced by the independent group leader A.K.M.S. Rajendran, going
to courts against his removal.
Mr. Rajendran has alleged that the lack of cooperation
shown by the Mayor with the group leadership and members can further
deepen the crisis within his group.
He charged that Colombo district UNP MP Mohamed
Maharoof was controlling the newly appointed Mayor.
He said this situation would force his party to
stop supporting the Mayor in the work of the CMC.
Mr. Rajendran said his group was ready to pave
the way for UNP members to substitute themselves as soon as the
legal hurdles were cleared.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sirisena Cooray said the UNP was
carefully watching the situation and awaiting a favourable response
to substitute its members.
