CMC clubs
cry foul at district cricket polls

The Cinnamon Gardens Police last night commenced
investigations into allegations that fraudulent documents had been
used by persons to vote at the Colombo District Cricket Association
(CDCA) elections on Friday, thus depriving those eligible to vote.
The elections were held at the Sinhalese Sports
Club where some persons presented themselves as the Colombo Municipal
Council nominees representing four clubs controlled by the council.
Police said that according to the complaint the
CMC representatives who had the original nomination papers signed
by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Jayantha Liyanage and the CMC Sports
and Recreation Director Sanath Weerasooriya had been deprived of
voting.
“We have started investigations on the complaints
of the forged documents” said Cinnamon Gardens Police OIC
S.M. Keerthipala.
Dr. Liyanage alleged that duplicate nomination
forms had been prepared with forged signatures.
When the representatives called up for registration,
Hiran Jayamanne at the registration counter had said that the CMC
representatives had already registered themselves and refused to
allow them to register,” he said, adding that it was apparently
a plot to tarnish the image of the Council.
CDCA’s new president Nuski Mohamed told
The Sunday Times that even though they hoped for a fair poll a few
had entered with forged documents.
Nomads, Peterson, Kollupitiya and Muthuwella Clubs
are managed by the CMC and are entitled to seven votes. Nomads,
Peterson and Kollupitiya are controlling clubs and entitled to two
votes each while Muthuwella, which is an affiliated member of Sri
Lanka Cricket, has one vote.
Mr. Mohamed was elected with 28 votes as against
three votes to his opponent J.K. Mathivannan.
