PNM brings
relief to displaced villagers
The first stage of distributing relief from the
fund started by the Patriotic National Movement (PNM) to people
displaced from their villages got underway this week in the Welikanda
area.

Kitchen equipment and dry rations were issued to
about 1000 families from the 8 villages of Mahindagama, Menikdeniya,
Nawamenikdeniya, Kadawathkaduwa, Kurulubedda, Nagastenna, Maithreegama
and Ruwanpitiya. Building construction items were also issued to
10 families who lost family members in the recent terrorist attack.
In addition, items needed on a daily basis were given to those engaged
in duty as home guards. The value of all these items exceeded a
million rupees.
Speaking on the occasion JVP MP and PNM general
secretary Wimal Weerawansa said homeguards should be prepared in
the future to act as an auxiliary unit to the Army to successfully
face the threats of the Tiger terrorists. He said the PNM will always
be with the Army and the people in the task of fighting the Tigers.
The movement will always stand by the home guards
and take whatever steps necessary in solving their problems by taking
them up with the Government, he said.
Among others who were present on the occasion
were its president Gunadasa Amarasekera, national organiser Senaratna
de Silva Dr. Wasantha Bandara, attorney Rajah Gunaratne, Polonnarurwa
District MP S.K. Subasinghe and Provincial Councillor Indrananda
Silva.
