Powerful
landmine detected, defused
A land mine weighing more than 40 kilograms and
believed to be set to be triggered off against security forces was
detected by the army close to the Batticaloa town, a Defence Ministry
spokesman said.
A few hours later, a claymore mine fixed to a
tree along the main Puttlam-Kalpitiya road was detected and defused.
The mine planted along the Kaliyankadu-Batticaloa
road in a location less than half a kilometre to the centre of the
town was discovered by an army foot patrol before an army convoy
was due to move along the road, the spokesman said.
The spokesman said this was the first time that
a land mine had been detected close to the town though there were
several claymore mine attacks in and around the Batticaloa town
during the past few months. He said the explosives were of C4 type
which had been used by the LTTE in previous attacks.
The claymore mine on the Puttalam-Kalpitiya road
was detected last afternoon in a location about 15 kilometres south
of the Kalpitiya town.
In another incident a person reported to be an
army informant was shot dead in the Kalpitiya area on Friday night.
In Akkaraipattu, a man was shot dead around 6.30
p.m. yesterday by suspected Karuna faction cadres. The victim, a
father of three, was believed to be an LTTE sympathizer.
Meanwhile, a headless body was recovered by Police
at Allaipiddi in Kayts yesterday.
The body is yet to be identified.
In two separate grenade attacks on foot patrols
in Chavakachcheri and Pointpedru in Jaffna last night, three soldiers
were injured.
