TUs highlight
CB employees plight
Several frontline trade unions have grouped together
to highlight the case of the banking sector employees who have lost
their jobs, prompting those employees to embark on an agitation
campaign, by way of a satyagraha which is now over one and a half
months old.
The satyagraha staged by these employees attached
to the Central Bank is nearly 50 days old, its organisers said,
adding that it has come to a decisive stage where the struggle would
continue unabated till victory is sighted.
A petition in this connection has been sent to
the President with copies to the Deputy Finance Minister, the Central
Bank Governor, the Director General of the Presidential trade union
unit and secretaries of five main political parties among others,
for mediation.
The petition states that the right to employment,
is only second to the right to live.
The petition also states that as a responsible
TU federation the signatories are staging their own protest at the
indifference shown by those in authority.
MP K.D.Lalthantha of the Jathika TU centre is
the first signatory while Rev. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera is the
second in a lengthy petition that has as many as 121 signatories,
representing various unions.
