An Uva Provincial Council member has filed action
against an international airline claiming damages that he was treated
in an ‘unprofessional and discourteous manner’ as a
disabled passenger while on a flight to Frankfurt early this year. The
member, Senarath Attanayake, a lawyer and also an ex-minister of
the Uva Provincial Council, who has to use a wheelchair to get about
is claiming Rs. 10 million from Qatar Airways for the alleged ill-treatment.
He has filed a case in the Colombo District Courts
claiming he had informed Classic Travels, his travel agent, to inform
Qatar Airways that he has to use a wheelchair and that he will be
using two wheelchairs-one electric and the other a manual- during
his trip to Frankfurt via Doha, Qatar. He was flying to attend an
international exhibition.
He claims that when he arrived at Frankfurt he
was informed that the two wheelchairs had been misplaced by the
airline. Thus causing him inconvenience.
He said the wheelchairs were returned to him only
two days later and he had to obtain an alternative mode of transport
on his own accord while the airline authorities did not help him
in anyway.
He also said the wheel chairs were returned to
him damaged and with parts missing.
He said that due to the negligence of the airline
authorities he could not carry out his marketing strategy at the
exhibition.
Mr. Attanayake had requested Qatar Airways to
donate a sum of Rs 100,000 to a disabled home as compensation but
since there was no response from the authorities concerned he therefore
claimed Rs. 10 million as compensation for the irresponsible and
discourteous treatment meted to him.
