Journalism Awards

Five well-known journalists are to be honoured by the Editors Guild and the Sri Lanka Press Institute at the Journalism Awards for Excellence 2005 to be held on Tuesday at the Mt. Lavinia Hotel.

Twenty one other journalists from the Sinhala, Tamil and English media will also receive awards for their contributions to the field of journalism.

The five recipients who will receive the life-time appreciation awards for their longstanding contribution to journalism are:

Hema Gunawardana

Hema Gunawardana, news and features writer for the Dinamina from 1953 to 1984. Ms. Gunawardana was earlier an employee of the Wijaya Newspaper group.

Motagedara Wanigaratna

Motagedara Wanigaratna, cartoonist and artist for the Lankadeepa newspaper in 1952. Mr. Wanigaratne, whose work has been published in all print media in Sri Lanka, also worked for the Dawasa and Aththa newspapers in 1967.

Leslie Dahanaike

Leslie Dahanaike, he joined the Daily News in 1954. He was also the Editor of the Daily and Sunday Observer. He is presently at the Sunday Leader.

V.W. Abeygunawardena

V.W. Abeygunawardena was the Editor-in-Chief of the Peramuna newspaper between 1950 and 1956. He was also the Editor of the Silumina, Janatha, Savasa and Siyarata newspapers and the Deputy Editor of the Sinhala Dictionary between 1976 and 1978. Mr. Abeygunawardene also held the post of Secretary of the Mahawamsa Editorial Board from 1978 to 1995.

A. Sivanesaselvan

A. Sivanesaselvan, a former Editor-in-Chief of the Veerakesari and Thinakural newspapers is also a member of the Editors’ Guild and a Vice President of the South Asia Free Media Movement. He was a lecturer at the Sri Lanka College of Journalism.

 

Meanwhile three of the best students of the Sri Lanka College of Journalism, in the Sinhala, Tamil and English streams will also receive awards.
