Missing KMC
file turns up in courts?
By L.B. Senaratne
An important file of the Kandy Municipal Council
(KMC) pertaining to a building said to be owned by the Municipal
Council has reportedly gone missing while a Committee inquiry was
pending.
But strangely, the file was being allegedly made
use of by persons filing cases against the KMC.
Municipal Councillor Asmin Marikkar complained
at the monthly Council meeting that documents from the "White
House" file which went missing during an inquiry were now being
used against the Council in legal cases.
He said that he would like to view the documents
so filed before court.
The main allegation is that the KMC does not know
what it owns on behalf of the public, the old Planter's Club building
being the crux of the matter.
There was an inquiry into the property’s
ownership. However, a committee of inquiry was appointed by the
Council, headed by former Deputy Mayor Edmund Silva.
During the course of the inquiry it was found
that the file pertaining to the building was missing from the Council
premises. The Deputy Mayor had brought it to the notice of the then
Mayor on several occasions.
No action had been taken till the council went
into dissolution, said Councillor Marikkar.
It is learnt that a peon had been interdicted
and dismissed regarding the matter, but many question whether the
peon was responsible for the disappearance.
