Have you come across another Hotel Samudra just
down the road from Galle Face? Well this is not a new hotel and
is located in the building that houses the Ceylon Hotel School and
is in the same premises at the Sri Lanka Tourist Board – and
a few metres away from the more familiar Cinnamon Grand.
This hotel has been operating since December 2004,
and has generated Rs 1.6 million in turnover last month. “We
have a great response from the business community for the facilities
we provide,” said Renuker Gunaratne, Resident Manager of the
Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism Hotel Management which runs the hotel.
He said they have many frequent clients such as
the Rotary Club and Toastmasters Club. As this hotel is handled
as a co-product of the institute most of the students are involved
in the day-to-day operations.
“We give the priority to students in staffing
the hotel,” he said. Income from the hotel subsidises the
school.
Though there are bigger competitors in the area
– Taj, Galle Face Hotel, Cinnamon Grand and Holiday Inn –
Hotel Samudra is not too concerned about competition as it helps
to provide on-the-job training to Hotel School students.
