Navy gets new Chief of Staff

Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera was appointed Chief of Staff of the Navy on Friday.

He joined the Navy in August, 1971 and became a Rear Admiral in January, 2001.

He has also held several appointments prior to this appointment including that of Deputy Chief of Staff, Director General (Operations) and Commander Northern, Eastern and Southern Naval Area. He was the first Squadron Commander of the Navy’s fast attack craft flotilla.

He has also been awarded several gallantry medals.
