Fresh efforts by Scandinavian ceasefire monitors
were underway yesterday to secure the release of Sub Inspector Bandujeewa
Bopitigoda, who is being detained by the LTTE.

Sub Inspector Bandujeewa Bopitigoda |
Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission chief Ulf Henricsson
in discussions with LTTE political wing leader, S.P.Thamilselvan
in Kilinochchi took up the matter regarding the release of the police
officer, who was “re-remanded” by an LTTE court on Friday.
Expectations were high yesterday that the officer
would be released. President Mahinda Rajapaksa met the wife and
the child of SI Bandujeewa yesterday. The Defence Ministry website
said the officer had already been released. But SLMM spokesman in
Colombo Thorfinnur Omarsson last night said Mr. Henricsson was still
discussing the release of the police officer.
The police officer who works for the National Child
Protection Authority has been in LTTE custody for the past 10 months
after he strayed into rebel-controlled areas in Mannar in pursuit
of a British paedophile.
After the government allowed LTTE media coordinator
Dayanithi alias Daya Master to obtain medical treatment in Colombo
for a heart ailment, the police officer’s wife made a plea
for his release. But her appeal was turned down by the rebels.
Meanwhile Daya Master who was admitted to the Apollo
Hospital on Thursday was discharged yesterday with the Sri Lanka
Monitoring Mission settling the bill.
Mr. Omarsson confirmed that the bill was paid by
the SLMM with the understanding that the amount would be reimbursed
by the LTTE.
Last morning Daya Master was escorted by the SLMM
and the army back to Vavuniya from where he was to travel with the
SLMM to Kilinochchi.
An official of the National Movement Against
Terrorism said the group lodged a complaint at Police Headquarters
calling for the arrest of Daya Master but Inspector General Chandra
Fernando said yesterday he was unaware of it. |
