Lead going to Tiger areas?
Police are investigating whether lead manufactured
in an illicit factory in the Kalpitiya area close to the coast is
being transported to LTTE-controlled areas by sea.
The Wanathavillu police recently busted an illicit
factory at Wembuwa in the Wanathavillu area manufacturing lead from
discarded vehicle batteries.
SSP Roshan Fernando told The Sunday Times that
initial investigations had revealed the factory had been in operation
for some time with its workers residing in the factory premises
itself so that the whole operation could be kept undercover.

Four suspects, all from Chilaw, were taken in
for questioning as a sequel to the raid.
The suspects’ version that lead was being
turned out in these factories for use by fishermen in their fishing
nets is not being fully believed by the police. Police are now on
the look out to make further arrests from areas such as Pubudugama
and Wembuwa.
Police said boats are being used to transport
both the discarded batteries and the lead as transport over land
is difficult in the area.
