JVP to meet President again, link-up soon
The JVP politburo decided on Friday to expedite
talks by its leaders with President Mahinda Rajapaksa to conclude
a common programme and join the Government.
With this in mind, a JVP delegation, led by its
leader Somawansa Amerasinghe and comprising, among others, General
Secretary Tilvin Silva and Parliamentary Group leader Wimal Weerawansa,
will meet President Rajapaksa tomorrow.
The Sunday Times revealed exclusively last week
that the JVP will join the Government after talks on a common minimum
programme are concluded. Mr. Amerasinghe confirmed at a news conference
this week that talks were underway and the JVP would support the
Government as part of a broad front to tackle common issues.
This announcement paved the way for President
Rajapaksa to relax a self-imposed ban and take in more MPs from
the UNP. The latest to crossover was W. B. Ekanayake, UNP Anuradhapura
district parliamentarian. Puttalam district parliamentarian Neomal
Perera is expected to follow suit tomorrow.
