UNP panel to further probe CMC nomination fiasco
The UNP Disciplinary Committee has appointed a
three-man panel to probe further the in-house report that went into
the fiasco that resulted in the party's nomination list for the
Colombo Municipality being rejected last February.
The three-member panel comprises U.B. Wijekoon
(Chairman), a former Cabinet Minister and Ambassador to Russia and
one-time Director of Mercantile Credit Ltd., Ranjith Fernando, one-time
General Manager of the National Development Bank and P. Mayadunne,
a former Examiner of Questioned Documents.
The panelists will probe the Mahinda Haradasa-Milroy
Perera report that investigated whether there was a conspiracy within
the party to have its list rejected for the Colombo Municipal elections.
The report said they found no such conspiracy,
but went on to make strong findings about the manner in which the
list was handled, and recommended that the matter be gone into further.
The party's Working Committee and its Political
Affairs Committee decided to go into the matter in greater detail,
especially in regard to the conduct of two UNP Colombo city MPs,
Milinda Moragoda and Mohamed Maharoof who were at the centre of
the controversy, especially in the tippexing of candidates’
names and interpolation of their aides instead.
Meanwhile, the UNP appointed Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene,
MP to replace Mr. Moragoda from the party's Political Affairs Committee
from which he resigned this week soon after he returned from India
where he accompanied party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
