Wesley hold
Kingswood
Wesley 16, Kingswood 16
By Shamseer Jaleel
Wesley played some outstanding rugby to hold the
defending Schools League champions Kingswood to a 16 all draw at
the Royal Sports Complex yesterday. Wesley scored through 1 Goal,
2 Penalties and 1 drop goal to Kingswoods’ 2 Tries, 1 Penalty
and 1 Drop Goal. At the short breather Wesley led 13-5
In the 11th minute of the game Wesley drew first
blood through a 30 meter penalty by Yasas Nonis which signaled their
attacking intention. Kingswood’s place kicker Dev Anand had
an off day when he missed a sitter in front of the posts. In the
16th minute of the game Kingswood lock forward Rizvan Nazar went
over through a push over try under the posts. With Dev Anand taking
too much time for the kick the conversion was disallowed by the
referee. In the 20th minute Wesley scrum half Samanth Lakshan was
on target with a 30 meter penalty to take 6-5 lead. Soon afterwards
Wesley playing attacking rugby scored off a sweeping three quarter
move by Tuan Jayah. Nonis was on target with the kick to stretch
the lead to 13-5 at “Lemons”..
Soon after the “Lemons” Wesley kept
on attacking in the Kingswood territory but could not score due
the rock solid Kingswood defence. This made Wesely stand off Amal
Pathirana to have a kick at the goal through a drop goal 30 meter
out. One minute later Dev Anand scored through a 30 meter penalty.
In the 6th minute of the game Kingswood lock forward Chanaka Perera
went over the line for a converted try.
Though the next 10 minutes saw the Kingswoodians
dominating proceeding through some fine forwards play lacked the
finishing touches where they did not turn their good work in to
points after having a shocking initial half. With 10 minutes to
go Dev Anand’s drop kick 30 meters out equaled the scores.
Though Kingswood kept on attacking the last few minutes they were
kept away from scoring by the Wesley outfit.
