By Bernie Wijesekera
Twelve teams have been picked by the International
Rugby Board and the Asian Rugby Football Union Rugby 7s competition
to be staged from 15 to 17 September, at Nittawela. According to
Isvan Omar co-ordinating secretary it’s a tournament to establish
the rankings in the region.
It has also given an opportunity for schoolboys
too. Six teams from the outstations and six from Colombo have been
picked on performances from the ongoing schools competition.
The IRB in collaboration with the ARFU had 20
teams in the pool. Finally they pruned it down to 12 and will play
in four pools.
They are: Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei, Sri Lanka,
Arabian Gulf, Hong Kong, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, India,
Pakistan. Standby: Philippines. Singapore and Guam have been relegated.
