Eco lover issues guidelines to keep Kandy clean
A leading environmentalist has drawn up guidelines
for visitors who flock to Kandy to witness the Esala Perahera in
order to prevent pollution of the ancient city.
Dr. Mrs. Ajantha Perera, Founder of the National
Programme on Recycling of Solid Waste, who issued the guidelines,
requested the public to act responsibly towards the preservation
of the Kandy Lake.
Kandy attracts over 1.7 million visitors during
the perahera season and has suffered greatly in the past due to
negligence of people who arrive to witness this cultural procession,
Dr. Perera said in a news release.
She said it was the responsibility of the families
to take every precaution to prevent disposing of these unwanted
substances within the city.
By having everyone bring a bag in which they could
keep their foodstuff and unwanted materials, and also by bringing
food required for the journey from home, they could prevent dumping
waste inside the city.
She also requested the people not to bring any
plastic bags or purchase any items in plastic bags as they would
be leaving them behind. She said the public should use the garbage
bins located in the city to dispose of any waste.
Concerning the Kandy Lake, she requested all to do their best to
keep the Lake and its surroundings clean and also to utilize the
toilets with consideration for others.
Mrs. Perera also advised the Kandy Municipal Council
to raise public awareness towards keeping the city clean.
