Lankan Police trainees move to Madhya Pradesh
The training of 44 selected Sri Lankan Police officers
in Coimbatore, South India has been shifted to an adjoining state
following protest from the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
The special training has been shifted to Madhya
Pradesh following protests by Mr. Karunanidhi’s party.
Indian High Commission spokesperson Nagma Malik
told The Sunday Times the training would go ahead despite reports
that the training would be called off and the policemen would have
to return to Colombo.
“They are certainly not coming back to Sri
Lanka,” Ms. Malik said.
The protests were lodged on the grounds that the
trained policemen will be deployed to suppress the Tamils in the
north-east.
The 44 police personnel including four high ranking
officers were being trained by the Central Reserve Police Force
(CRPF) training academy in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.
The Sri Lankan High Commission and the CRPF say
it is defensive and non lethal policing that is being taught to
the visitors as part of frequent exchange training programmes.
