Int’l Bar Assn. gifts Rs. 1 m. to tsunami-affected lawyers

The International Bar Association (IBA) has granted a further one million rupees for Sri Lankan lawyers affected by the tsunami.

Former President of the Sri Lanka Bar Association, Desmond Fernando, while in England, had convinced the International Bar Association (IBA) to grant the donation. Mr. Fernando was in England at the invitation of the Law Faculty of Oxford University to take part in a seminar attended by eminent jurists from several countries on ‘The Philosophical Justification for Political Violence’ presided over by Professor John Gardner, Professor of Jurisprudence of Oxford University.

This donation brings the total amount granted by the IBA to five million rupees, in addition to the three post-graduate scholarships donated to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka for young Sri Lankan lawyers.
