Fresh guidelines for searching vehicles
Police are being given fresh guidelines on searching
vehicles for explosives including what to look for following last
week’s haul of weapons, ammunition and explosives at Bentota,
which triggered speculation as to whether a southern VVIP or a building
was the target.
IGP Chandra Fernando declined to comment on a
possible target but said a top level CID team led by its head DIG
Asoka Wijethilaka has been assigned the investigation.
Karandeniya Police acting on a tip-off had apprehended
the lorry carrying the ‘explosive’ consignment on Friday
morning and detained two suspected LTTE cadres who were in the lorry.
The consignment included 30 side chargers weighing
5kg, 2 large claymore mines, 3 T-56 guns, 8 T-56 magazines, one
pistol, C4 explosives weighing 50 kg, 48 hand grenades and 200 detonators.
The suspects were residents of Kilinochchi and
Jaffna. IGP Fernando told The Sunday Times that it was quite a large
haul and caused concern.
He said initial investigations were handled by
the Karandeniya Police and now the CID was handling them.
“We need to educate the police on various
forms and methods used in transporting explosives and what to look
for,” he said.
