More on
the drug menace
By Rangi Akbar
Speaking on the burning question of drugs being
used by school rugby players, which was highlighted in the Daily
Mirror yesterday, Asanga Seneviratne, the S. Thomas’ rugby
coach said: “The Rugby Union knew that drugs were being used
by schoolboys. It was first spotted by former Sri Lanka coach George
Simpkin when he was in charge of the Sri Lanka under 19 side. The
level of fitness fell far below at the national level in comparison
with the standard displayed at school games.”

Continuing Asanga said that only now the question
is being raised. “It is extremely harmful to young rugby players
and should be nipped in the bud.”
Antonian coach Viper Guneratne Jnr. Said yesterday
that he was aware that drugs are being used at school level but
that he cannot comment further. “The Antonians train hard
and we use mental therapy to overcome difficult situations. But
drugs? Never! ”
Continuing on the subject of training Viper (Jnr)
said that he had followed a training stint in Australia and all
what he had learnt ‘down under’ under expert coaches
is being conveyed to the Antonians
